Palm Oil
Palm Oil is made from the fruit of the Oilseed Palm. Like other Palms, it grows in tropical climates. Fractions of Palm Oil are known as Palm Olein (low melting point) and Palm Stearin (high melting point).
Product Characteristics
In contrast to most vegetable oils, Palm Oil and other tropical oils are high in saturated fat. A high intake of saturated fat may have negative health effects such as increasing the risk of heart disease. In its unrefined form, Palm Oil contains high levels of betacarotene, a precursor of Vitamin A.
Uses & Applications
Palm Oil is widely used in the baking industry, where it is used as multi-purpose shortening and as the basis for industrial margarine products. In food service, Palm Oil and Palm Olein are common deep frying mediums due to their good frying life. In industrial deep frying applications, Hi-Oleic oils continue to gain popularity as an alternative to Palm Oil.
